What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?
The primary difference between a veneer and a crown is the amount of natural tooth structure that needs to be replaced. Porcelain veneers are composed of thin ceramic layers that essentially replace tooth enamel. Similar to a contact lens for the eye, a veneer adheres to the outer surface of a tooth. A crown almost, if not entirely, replaces the enamel “cap” of a tooth, down to the gum level.
Dr. Chiu recommends veneers for many aesthetic imperfections such as poor color, shape or contours, fractured teeth, as well as some minor bite-related problems. They are also an excellent option for managing superficial stains in teeth not amenable to bleaching. She recommends crowns when your teeth have lost more structure and therefore more material is needed to replace it.
Do you do implant restoration?
An implant is a replacement for a natural tooth that requires a titanium replacement “root” be integrated into a patient’s jaw for maximum strength. A natural-looking prosthetic tooth that perfectly matches your bite and your other teeth is then placed on the root. Dr. Chiu works with highly qualified periodontists to place the implant, and then crafts and places your replacement tooth (or teeth) for amazing-looking and long-lasting results.
What types of crowns/ restorations do you provide?
There are a huge number of advanced new materials available for tooth-colored crowns and restorations. Your teeth are unique, and Dr. Chiu knows that there is not one product that fits all patients. She will select a material that provides the best combination of functional strength and beauty for your specific tooth or teeth, including:
- Porcelain fused to metal
- Zirconia crowns
